Hafla

September 19, 2008 03:16 PM

Tomorrow night is our first hafla of the fall semester. “Hafla” is a Middle Eastern dance party; a Sahara Dance hafla is a belly dance party! We rent out Pasha Lounge, a club in Dupont Circle, and DJ Gianma spins belly dance, hip hop and dance music all night (well, from 7:00 – 10:00 pm). It is mostly open dancing for all, but there are performances by our student companies, Raqs Caravan East and Raqs Caravan West, and student and teacher solos sprinkled throughout the night. Shakira isn’t the only one who can belly dance to pop songs; you should see what your classmates can do! Pasha is a great location for a hafla. There is plenty of room for dancing, a balcony upstairs for watching the performances, and plenty of couches for catching your breath between songs.

So, grab your favorite hip scarf, bring a friend and unleash your shimmies on the dance floor. If you forget your hip scarf, don’t worry. We’ll have a few for sale there.
