Yesterday, I went to the Turkish Festival at the Freedom Plaza downtown. I must admit that I went primarily for the food, but the music was excellent and there were belly dancers! Although there were performances all day, I saw only a few: Kardelen Turkish Dance Ensemble, Washington DC Turkish Folkdance Troupe, the Bluestar Dance Company, and Turkish Folk Music from Anatolia Husnu Aydogdu.
The food was also spectacular. I sampled borek, dolmas, gyro, baklava, and a few other delicious dishes whose names I can’t remember but whose flavors I’d like to duplicate at home. The bazaar offered lots of jewelry with beads that look like eyes, no doubt amulets protecting against the evil eye. There were also vendors with beautiful silver jewelry, colorful Turkish bowls and serving platters, and exquisite gold, silver and metal trays. I was there just to browse, but there were many things that caught my eye. The weather was perfect for spending the day outdoors, and I saw several Sahara Dancers enjoying the festival too!
