Yousry Sharif is an international man of mystery. I’ve heard of him, of course, almost always discussed in hushed voices and reverential terms, such as “creative genius” or “master choreographer.” I almost expected to meet some mythical, larger-than-life man, or perhaps a petulant and temperamental artist. In fact, I met a very kind man of few words. Over the last two days, I had the opportunity to watch Yousry work the magic that has earned him a position of honor and renown in the international belly dance community. From my spot on the steps outside the studio, I observed Yousry’s creative process, choreographing some challenging routines on the spot. He is a charismatic and expressive dancer; I could see his face cloud over when a move just wasn’t working, then brighten up as he worked it out. He just beams while he dances and watches his students work out the moves and add their own flair to what he has taught. I hear that he can be quite a demanding instructor, with strict rules about talking, but that somehow just adds to his charm and mystique.
Yousry taught a different choreography each day. I didn’t get a chance to see the entire finished choreography on Saturday, but I did get to watch the final piece on Sunday. It was impressive! Yousry included what appeared to me to be some nontraditional belly dance moves, including some toe tapping and a floor sequence, but also some complicated layering moves that I can’t even begin to break down. I think Yousry wore out a lot of the students - there were lots of happy, sore, sweaty, inspired, and exhausted students by the end of the weekend.
Rest up, everyone. Yousry will be back February 21-22 with brand new choreographies!
