Beginner Blog: The last dance (class) (of the semester)

December 11, 2008 06:46 PM

Last night was the last class of the semester. I never knew 14 weeks could go by so quickly! This was a great class, with great classmates and a great teacher, and I feel like my dancing improved greatly on the second time around. The first time through BI was exposure to the moves, the second time was practice and mastery (hopefully!). Though I still feel rather awkward with some layering, I can get two distinct moves going at the same time. They may not look pretty yet, but they’re there.

The last class was a review and, of course, Melissa made it fun with some games. We had a study in chaos confusion as we tried to navigate a traveling choreography in a box around the room, before settling into straight(ish) lines traveling from one side to the other. We broke into circles and had to follow the dancer in the middle, then broke loose into a free-for-all, dance-what-you-feel mass of shimmies and flying armpaths. Everyone pretty much stuck to her group until one bold soul (Alexis?) decided to infiltrate the other group with traveling hip pushes and throw down shimmy-challenges. By the end, we were mostly laughing sweaty messes picking coins and beads out of our feet (some hipscarves just can’t keep up with the enthusiasm!). It was a great last class. I have made some friends this semester, advanced my dance training and gained confidence in my ability. I’m a bit sad that it is over, but I’m already looking forward to next semester.
