Name : Kandice

What is your role within the Sahara Dance community? Studio Assistant

First job: I was 16 when I got my first job as a part-time cashier at CVS. It was perfect for a product-loving junkie like me.

What’s playing on your iPod or CD player? I am listening to “Jump” by Madonna, very motivational song!

Indulgence: Oooh, good one! Museums, art, yoga, dance, black and white photography, postcards, live music, dark chocolate, red wine, really really good food, old movies, consignment and second hand shopping, fashion magazines and good company.

What is your dance background? I have been taking classes at SD for a little over a year and before that just dancing around the house.

How did you get interested in belly dance? I was inspired by a Shakira performance I saw on TV once and thought belly dance is something I would love to try. I did an internet search for belly dance classes in DC and had no idea that a community already existed here when I found Sahara Dance. I registered for my first “Beginner 1” class with Ebony in Fall ‘07.

What’s your favorite belly dance moment or experience? My favorite belly dance moment is from a Rachel Brice workshop I attended at The Birchmere. She came around to make posture adjustments and aided in mine. All I could think was, “she touched me!” (funny) I also enjoyed performing in UDM 6 and look forward to the next show in May!

Current inspirations: My current dance inspirations are: Maya Szekely of Hungary, Mia Shauri of Puerto Rico, Egyptian belly dancers Katy (or Katie) and Suheir Zaki.

Finally, what do you love most about Sahara Dance (other than Hip Talk, of course!)? I love how Sahara Dance is committed to ensuring students have the best belly dance experience possible. Oh, and I’m loving Hip Talk, of course!

-Light and Love, Kandice
