Saturday Workshop: Introduction to Tribal Belly Dance

February 17, 2009 10:24 AM

It somehow seems appropriate to devote one day in February to tribal belly dance, a Californian invention of the imagination based on Orientalist fantasies and feminism. Tribal belly dance is a creative fusion of folkloric dance styles of the Middle East and North Africa with modern, jazz, flamenco, Polynesian and hip hop. It is an organic, improvisational, supportive and celebratory dance that focuses on the group and shared leadership.

The Introduction to Tribal Belly Dance workshop will introduce the fundamentals of Sahara Style Tribal, characterized by rhythm-based combinations, structured improvisation and folkloric fusions. Ideal for those curious about tribal belly dance and/or interested in joining Raqs Caravan West. Tribal dancers share basic movement vocabulary, standard dance formations, improvisational cues and transitions to create pieces as a tribe. Tribal dance often fosters friendships; a strong sense of community can evolve from improvising as a group.
