Name: Allyson
What is your role within the Sahara Dance community? Instructor
Childhood ambition: An actor or art historian or both
First job: Cashier at a driving range and mini golf…it was very exciting…
What’s playing on your iPod or CD player? The songs for my two UDM performance classes. (For you B1/B2’ers out there, that’s “Baatrek Lak,” and for you B2’ers, that’s “Taqsim.”)
Indulgence: Getting a massage, shopping, watching TV, not going to the gym if I don’t feel like it, snuggling my puppies.
What’s your favorite belly dance moment or experience? Whenever my students have fun in class.
Current inspirations: My fellow Sahara Dance teachers and Sahra Saeeda.
What is your dance background? BBD (Before Belly Dance) the only dancing I did was a very, very occasional salsa or swing night and one (that’s right, just one) ballet class. I was always more of a martial arts person and rock climber, both of which can be “dance-y” in terms of movement and balance.
How did you get interested in belly dance? Out of the blue one day my roommate asked, “Hey…you wanna try BELLY DANCING?!?!” A couple of days later we were enrolled for a semester at Joy of Motion…in Rachel Brookmire’s first class no less.
Finally, what do you love most about Sahara Dance (other than Hip Talk, of course!)? Fabulous women. It’s a community bursting with beautiful, kind, talented teachers, dancers, and students.
