Most sports have training camps and team practices to prepare for a big game, match, meet, or event. Athletes push themselves hard during rigorous training sessions so that when they step on to the court, field, track or into the ring, the hard work is done. They can enjoy the competition, because they’re ready and focused, and their bodies know what to do.
Though not a competitive sport where we train to win, belly dancers train nonetheless. We attend classes where we learn new techniques. We drill the movements into our muscle memory, so when the teacher calls out “twisty!,” our hips start twisting before we even have a chance to think about it. Once we master movements, we layer them on top of one another and mix them into new combinations. We rehearse our choreographies, memorizing them in our minds and our muscles. We adjust, correct, and practice, practice, practice, so that when we perform, we can relax, focus, smile. Our faces are joyful, sassy, coy and playful.
Belly dancing at its best looks effortless. We all know how much effort it really takes to look effortless! The next workshop in the Saturday Workshop series is designed to boost your belly dance training:
Drills for Precision and Endurance
Is it time to make that shimmy last just a little longer? Do you feel like some of your circles, figure-eights or undulations look a little too much alike? Join us for two hours of non-stop, high-intensity drills and combinations structured to build endurance without sacrificing precision! Bring a large water bottle, a small towel, and get ready to shimmy into spring! This workshop is recommended for Low Intermediate level and above.
