Name: Cynthia

What is your role within the Sahara Dance community? Company Member - Raqs Caravan East

Childhood ambition: I always wanted to be a teacher.

First job: My first job was as a secretary in a small business company.

What’s playing on your iPod or CD player? Usually Brazilian songs or hip hop.

Current inspirations: One of my favorite dancers is Lulu Sabongi (she has been belly dancing since 1983). She is an amazing and caring person, and I had the pleasure of having her as my first teacher. She is truly an inspiration. She is always bringing something new and exciting to her classes.

What is your dance background? I grew up dancing. I did two years of ballet when I was a little girl. I did jazz for one year. Also, many Brazilian dances such as axe, forró, and samba for many years.

How did you get interested in belly dance? When I was 15 years old, I started watching a Brazilian soap opera called “O clone” (The clone). It showed a lot of the Arabic culture, and a lot of belly dancers dancing for their families and husbands. It was just fascinating. So, every place in my city started offering belly dance classes. I felt in love with the dance, and never stopped!

Finally, what do you love most about Sahara Dance (other than Hip Talk, of course!)? I loved Sahara from the moment I stepped in the studio! No kidding. The teachers are amazing. They really know what they are talking about. If you are searching for a place to belly dance, search no more! YOU FOUND IT! ;-)
