Countdown to Sahara Dance Caravan (Part 2)

August 12, 2009 03:33 PM

Welcome to the Countdown to Sahara Dance Caravan. This is Part 2 (Part 1 is here).

Were you up all night wondering how we were going to pull off a show with musical jumps from regional Egyptian traditional music to James Brown to Elvis and Whitesnake? We were, and we ditched Whitesnake. Whew! Now, onward to the countdown!

Recap:
10: The costumes
9: The props
8: The music

7: The makeup. As little girls, I’m sure we all snuck into our mother’s makeup bag and dreamed of the day we would be allowed to wear such delights. Then we grew up, and now we study hard and we work hard and we wear makeup every day. But a few days out of the year, we really wear makeup. Colors befitting an oil painting to last through time, eye shadow so bold and dramatic that we don’t recognize ourselves in the mirror, and eyelashes so long we can’t wear glasses. Those are the delights we dreamed of as little girls. You know what I’m talking about. And if you don’t, check out this Arabic makeup tutorial:

6: The food. There’s nothing like spending a weekend with a hundred or so fellow dancers, rehearsing and dancing up a storm to work up an appetite. With no time for meals, what’s a belly dancer to do? Head on back to the hallway behind the booth to grab some tasty treats while you while away the time until you hit the stage. Delicious treats provide fast energy and wholesome fruits and veggies will keep you going until the curtain closes. Marianne has been a busy bee for the last several days, baking treats to share! The food is replenished throughout the day, so check back. There may be a Snickers mini buried at the bottom of the chocolate bowl…

5: The photos. We have an amazing photographer (Len) who will be snapping shots for both shows. If you haven’t seen his work, check out our photo galleries and his table in the lobby on Saturday. When you pair a fantastic photographer with stunning subjects, you get beautiful evidence. Len can be in only one place at a time, so we’ll also have several other photographers shooting the show and capturing candid moments back stage and behind-the-scenes. We’ll share our photos in our photo gallery, so check back after the show to find your new Facebook photo.

That’s all for today… be sure to come back tomorrow for the next installment of the Countdown to Sahara Dance Caravan.

Time is running short, so if you (or your friends, families, colleagues, or your favorite barista) haven’t purchased tickets yet, you should do so. You can choose your seat online!
