Name: Rachel Brice
What is your role within the Sahara Dance community? I am the one who loves Rachel the most. When I’m not doing that, I love being the adjunct tribal fusion teacher.
Childhood ambition: To be a ballerina and a psychotherapist.
First job: Barista.
What’s playing on your iPod or CD player? It’s such a huge list. Magnetic Fields. And Master Musiciana of Jajouka.
Indulgence: Absinthe and French fries with truffle oil.
What’s your favorite belly dance moment or experience? The first time I saw Jill Parker dance. It was like getting punched in the face and the stomach at the same time.
Current inspirations: Bakst, Mardi Love, Fifi Abdou, Manca Pavli
What is your dance background? Flamenco, Kathak, Afro-Haitian, modern, academic dance ethnology classes, and lots and lots of belly dance.
How did you get interested in belly dance? At the Renaissance Fair, I saw a group called Hah’bi Ru, and when I saw a dancer delight in making her flesh shake, I knew it was a dance I could enjoy.
Finally, what do you love most about Sahara Dance (other than Hip Talk, of course!)? Every woman I’ve met that’s involved in the company is incredibly smart, and probably has some high-powered job and approaches the dance with a unique balance of dedication and frivolity. Plus, did I say I love Rachel Brookmire?
