Name: Alysia
What is your role within the Sahara Dance community? Raqs Caravan West Company Member
Childhood ambition: I don’t know if I really had any childhood ambitions. I must have, but I cannot think of them.
First job: My first job was a babysitting the neighborhood kids. The official first job, the one with a paycheck, was working at a daycare center.
What’s playing on your iPod or CD player? I am one of the few remaining people in the world without an iPod. We will see if I eventually cave. My CD player has some belly dance music (Beats Antique, Beirut), Cindy Lauper, Madonna, Robyn and whatever music Ami chooses for our performances pieces.
Indulgence: Any kind of sweets: gummy candies, cupcakes, etc. And reality TV, I could watch marathons of all of that stuff!
What’s your favorite belly dance moment or experience? My favorite belly dance moment is probably watching people perform. I love seeing how different dancers present themselves on stage. Hopefully I can be as cute and sassy as they all are.
Current inspirations: Rachel Brice, of course. Her stomach should be insured for millions, it is amazing!
What is your dance background? I took gymnastics when I was really young and around sixth grade I took jazz for a few years.
How did you get interested in belly dance? I used to work with Laura Franek and she introduced me to belly dance. When she became a teacher I took the BI class and really loved it.
Finally, what do you love most about Sahara Dance (other than Hip Talk, of course!)? I love the dancing and I love the women involved in Sahara Dance. There are so many great people who are associated with the organization. It is great to be a part of it!
