Name: Dita

What is your role within the Sahara Dance community? Raquettes Repertoire Member

Childhood ambition: I was going to be Indiana Jones in girl form.

First job: My first job was as an assistant in a porcelain doll shop. I helped teach the ladies how to make porcelain dolls starting from the wet porcelain beginnings to the final product, a beautiful doll.

What’s playing on your iPod or CD player? Our two songs for the Dec. performance are currently on repeat but I also listen to a variety of music. Big on my list are Chris Botti, Kings of Leon, Dead Can Dance, Beats Antique and Metallica.

Indulgence: Just about anything that gets my adrenaline pumping. Scuba diving, sky diving, fast cars and, of course, performing.

What’s your favorite belly dance moment or experience? My favorite experience is one that keeps repeating. The camaraderie that a lot of us get to develop while involved in each new performance class with the wonderful ladies performing with us.

Current inspirations: That would be the usual cast of characters: The Rachel Bs, Colleen (I’m a certified groupie) and several of the ladies I have performed with in the last few years. Some of my faves are Bex, Mandy, Nikki, Karen, Alysia, Lisa, Brooke and Laurie. We’ve done a lot together and grown a lot together. Some of us have followed different paths and I enjoy cheering them along their paths.

What is your dance background? I was a ballet dancer until I was 8 and did a little jazz before I was 10.

How did you get interested in belly dance? I went to Egypt back in 2005 and watched a few awesome performers. They way they were able to move had me mesmerized. I wanted to start dancing immediately but it took a little time for me to find Sahara Dance.

Finally, what do you love most about Sahara Dance (other than Hip Talk, of course!)? No doubt that it’s the community, the women (and I should include the men too) involved make life a lovely thing. This community is so warm and supportive and that helps me to thrive.
