Name: Candice

What is your role within the Sahara Dance community? Member of Raquettes Shimmy Pop and student

Childhood ambition: Growing up I was into the most unique and detailed fashion; therefore, I wanted to be an haute couture fashion designer. I particularly couldn’t wait to see the newest collections from Jean Paul Gaultier and Valentino.

First job: During high school I worked in the women’s department at Sears. I enjoyed piecing together outfits for customers but sometimes got a bit too obsessive at folding and refolding clothing to have a perfect organized pile of shirts for about 15 minutes before it got destroyed and I’d refold again :-)

What’s playing on your iPod or CD player? It’s amazing but I can’t help but shimmy to any and all types of music!

Indulgence: C-H-O-C-O-L-A-T-E! I have a huge sweet tooth!

What’s your favorite belly dance moment or experience? There’s so many — from my first hafla and feeling the enthusiasm and excitement of so many in the community, to my first performance last year at the annual show, to showing up the first day of this semester and seeing so many of my dance friends :-)

Current inspirations: All of the teachers I’ve had at Sahara, whether for a semester or as a substitute, have been huge inspirations for me. Each teacher has wowed in me different aspects whether it’s their gracefulness, their ability to pop and lock, their love of zills, or their overall love of dance.

What is your dance background? I do not have any prior dance training.

How did you get interested in belly dance? I was always into trying new things whether it was running a marathon, boxing etc. Once I started belly dance I got hooked and now it’s a huge part of my life!

Finally, what do you love most about Sahara Dance (other than Hip Talk, of course!)? Where else can I go after a hard days work to see a group of some of the coolest women in the DC metro area who share the same love for dance that I do?
