Balance: Yin Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation

Balance: Yin Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation

Balance the mind and body with a weekly practice of gentle stretching, stillness and reflection. Settle in with a 45-minute relaxed yin yoga practice designed to gently rebalance the body, followed by sitting meditation. Yin yoga is a slow practice of passive stretches held for 3-5 minute, targeting the deep release of fascia. Relax into each pose with guided mini-meditations to strengthen mindfulness and rejuvenate the body.

6:00 – 6:45 – Yin Yoga
6:45 – 7:00 – Seated Meditation

Let’s intentionally train the heart, body and mind for living with more presence, joy and compassion. Mindfulness meditation can help us meet life’s uncertainty with more peace and fulfillment. Yin Yoga can help keep the body agile and pain-free. In each Yin pose, apply reflective exercises to our moment-to-moment experience to observe habits of mind and body and discover greater ease and balance. Regularly reboot both mind and body as we start a new year!

All are welcome and no experience is necessary. For the yoga portion no special mat or equipment is needed. Please have a couple pillows (any kind will do) and/or yoga blocks nearby to support the passive stretches. For the meditation portion, you can use a cushion, chair or lie down.

Rachel Kay Brookmire is the founder and director of Sahara Dance. As a dedicated student of meditation and mindfulness practices, she seeks to integrate relaxation, body awareness and the cultivation of joyfulness into her offerings. Her classes explore playful, heart-centered themes to develop grace and gentleness and deepen awareness through mindfulness.

Rachel is offering the Balance: Yin Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation course as she completes the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program, a Two-Year Training Program for Teaching Awareness and Compassion-Based Practices with Jack Kornfield & Tara Brach, presented by The Awareness Training Institute and the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California at Berkeley. Rachel has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 2006 through regular silent retreats, participation in sanghas and home practice. She has participated in two “Year of Mindfulness” programs with Annie Mahon (Washington, DC) 2012 – 2013 and 2016 – 2017, as well as the Mindful Schools Year-long Certification program (Petaluma, CA) in 2014 – 2015. Rachel also completed the Authentic Leadership Certification at Naropa University (Boulder, CO) in 2009 and Yin Yoga Teacher Training with Sarah Powers at Kripalu (Lenox, MA) in 2006.

Since 2000, Rachel has taught belly dance to thousands of students throughout the Washington, DC area. She is also the creator of Sahara Dance Foundations, an intensive program for training belly dance teachers.
