Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation (6-week Series)

Let’s intentionally train the heart and mind, just as we train the body for dance.

Learn foundational mindfulness meditation practices for living with more presence, joy and compassion. Over the course of 6 classes we will apply reflective exercises to our moment-to-moment experience. Through these reflections we will observe habits of mind and explore tools for discovering greater ease and balance. Mindfulness meditation can help us meet life’s uncertainty with more peace and fulfillment. All are welcome and no experience is necessary. Class size is limited.

Rachel Kay Brookmire is the founder and director of Sahara Dance. As a dedicated student of meditation and mindfulness practices, she seeks to integrate relaxation, body awareness and the cultivation of joyfulness into her offerings. Her classes explore playful, heart-centered themes to develop grace and gentleness and deepen awareness through mindfulness.

Rachel is offering the Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation course as she completes the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program, a Two-Year Training Program for Teaching Awareness and Compassion-Based Practices with Jack Kornfield & Tara Brach, presented by The Awareness Training Institute and the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California at Berkeley. Rachel has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 2006 through regular silent retreats, participation in sanghas and home practice. She has participated in two “Year of Mindfulness” programs with Annie Mahon (Washington, DC) 2012 – 2013 and 2016 – 2017, as well as the Mindful Schools Year-long Certification program (Petaluma, CA) in 2014 – 2015. Rachel also completed the Authentic Leadership Certification at Naropa University (Boulder, CO) in 2009 and Yin Yoga Teacher Training with Sarah Powers at Kripalu (Lenox, MA) in 2006.

Since 2000, Rachel has taught belly dance to thousands of students throughout the Washington, DC area. She is also the creator of Sahara Dance Foundations, an intensive program for training belly dance teachers.

Miss a class? No problem! Make up class in one of our other classes within the same 6-week session. You are welcome to do make ups anytime within the same 6-week session, in advance of, or after, a missed class.

Choreography classes will be given access to video recordings of each class for the duration of the enrollment period.

Classes are offered through Zoom. We will email registered participants prior to the start of class with instructions on how to log in. Registration will remain open up until 30 minutes prior to the class start time, or as spaces remain available. All class times are Eastern Standard Time zone. PLEASE NOTE: registration confirmation and Zoom link will be sent approximately one hour prior to class.

For the live-streaming class series we ask all participants to turn on their videos to help create community and best pace the class. If you have technical constraints or prefer to participate without video, just let the teacher know. We want everyone to have a supportive and uplifting class experience.

The 6-week class series is offered on a sliding scale, with a minimum registration of $60 and a suggested registration of $90 – $120. Your class registration secures your spot in 6 classes for 6 weeks. For those who are able, we appreciate your generous contributions to keep our classes available. Your support helps ensure the continuity of our community dancing together. We are grateful for your generosity and care for our community. Thank you.

As a reminder: all are welcome and included! If the sliding scale is cost-prohibitive, please don’t let this keep you from dancing with us. Just email and we will help. We all benefit from dancing together at this time.
