Mini Moon Performance: Shaabi/Mahraganat (Low Intermediate +)

From the streets of Cairo to the Egyptian cinema, Egypt’s music scene today is dominated by the shaabi and electro-shaabi (mahraganat) genres. Shaabi is a form of popular working-class music from Cairo which evolved from baladi style dance. The newer mahraganat style is influenced by EDM, hip-hop, and reggaeton, making it both very fun to dance to and a challenge for the classic oriental dancer. We’ll dissect lyrics and cultural context, then explore big juicy movements, playful shimmies, and dynamic urban expression set to one of today’s hits!

Costume – blue jeans, white t-shirt, gold hip scarf.

Let’s commemorate a year of dance together at home with a gala show and community events.

Learn a choreography in live-streaming classes (or through class recordings) and practice at home as much as you like with the videos. Be part of the Mini Moon Google Groups and events to build community in preparation for our dance goals.

Performers will submit two videos:

1. A dress rehearsal video to receive private, individualized teacher feedback for your personalized dance growth (due May 8)
2. A final performance video for inclusion in the show (due May 22)

Celebrate as we debut the completed choreography montages at Sahara Dance Mini Moon on June 5th at 7:00 pm EST, live-streaming on Zoom. Dancers are welcome to enjoy performance classes and opt-out of submitting videos.
