Rachel: “What’s your favorite thing about teaching this workshop and what’s one tidbit dancers will learn at the workshop?”
Malina: “I love how learning a different style of dance through this workshop can connect students to a different culture. It’s something new for them that they may not have otherwise experienced. Through learning a new style of dance and to a song in another language they are connected to the diversity of the world.
One of the things that will be interesting about learning Bollywood fusion is that they will learn new types of hand and feet stylization. “Mudras” for example, are hand gestures unique to Indian forms that add grace and beauty to the dance. They will also learn to incorporate a range of facial expressions into their dance.”
Bollywood Grooves
Embark on a journey further east as you learn a unique fusion of Indian Bollywood dance and belly dance. The workshop will take you through some workout techniques based on both Bollywood and belly dance moves and launch into a fun, short routine. Bollywood is a blend of classical Indian dance, Indian folk dances such as Bhangra and contemporary western dances. Many of the muscles utilized overlap with the those used for belly dance, making it a suitable workshop for newcomers to both styles as well as for those with previous training. The class will also focus on range of expressions and emotions that can be expressed through joyful and dramatic Bollywood music. If you’re interested in joining Malina’s performance class for Under a Desert Moon but hadn’t yet signed up, this class will catch you up on the choreography!
