Intermediate 2 – Intro to Zills (Finger Cymbals) and Assaya (Cane)
$240.00 – $385.00
In this introductory props class, you’ll practice the art of belly dance while incorporating the rhythmic excitement of sagat (also known as zills or finger cymbals) and the soulful earthiness of Sai’idi (Upper Egyptian) and baladi (Cairo style) cane or stick dance.
In the first half of the semester, you’ll master the basic techniques of playing sagat, learning how to create the sounds and patterns that will enhance your dance with their vibrant sounds. From basic strikes to more complex combinations, you’ll begin to develop the skill and precision needed to synchronize your movements with the music.
For the second half, master the techniques of holding, twirling, and dancing with an assaya (cane) in authentic ways that reflect the earthy soulfulness of upper Egyptian Sai’idi folk dance or the sassy playfulness of Cairo baladi. Learn rhythms and corresponding steps to enrich your belly dance repertoire, complete with cane handling tips and tricks.
Prerequisites: At least one semester of Intermediate 1 (formerly called Low Intermediate) technique, no prior finger cymbals or cane experience required.
