Low Intermediate: Intro to Assaya (Cane) and Veil
$120.00 – $195.00
In this introductory props class, you’ll practice the art of belly dance while incorporating the graceful manipulation of a veil and the soulful earthiness of Sai’idi (Upper Egyptian) and baladi (Cairo style) cane or stick dance.
For the first half of the semester (8 weeks), master the techniques of holding, twirling, and dancing with an assaya (cane) in authentic ways that reflect the earthy soulfulness of upper Egyptian Sai’idi folk dance or the sassy playfulness of Cairo baladi. Learn rhythms and corresponding steps to enrich your belly dance repertoire, complete with cane handling tips and tricks.
For the second half of the semester (8 weeks), discover how to use the veil to accentuate your movements, add drama to your performance, and captivate your audience with its ethereal beauty. From classic Egyptian entrances to American Cabaret style wraps and flourishes, you’ll learn the techniques to enhance your artistry and extend your dance through the prop.
Prerequisite: Sahara Dance Low Intermediate Technique; Please bring a 3-yard silk or very lightweight chiffon veil and cane or dowel about hip height and an inch in diameter (some veils and canes will be available for purchase on site).
