Shaabi/Mahraganat Combos Workshop with Leilah Moon, June 22, 1:30-3:30 pm

$30.00$40.00

From the streets of Cairo to the Egyptian cinema, Egypt’s music scene today is dominated by the shaabi and electro-shaabi (mahraganat) genres. Shaabi is a form of popular working-class music from Cairo which evolved from baladi style dance. The newer mahraganat style is influenced by EDM, hip-hop, and reggaeton, making it both very fun to dance to and a challenge for the classic oriental dancer. We’ll dissect lyrics and cultural context, then explore big juicy movements, playful shimmies, and dynamic urban expression set to today’s hits!

Recommended for Intermediate and up.
