About Sahara Dance

Without love, all worship is a burden, all dancing is a chore, all music is mere noise.

Sahara Dance, Washington DC’s Center for Middle Eastern Dance, is a boutique dance studio dedicated to celebrating the joy and beauty of belly dance. Founded in 2002, Sahara Dance offers weekly belly dance classes and workshops in Tenley, D.C.. Seeking to elevate belly dance as a performance art and to create a community for belly dancers, Sahara Dance produces several annual theater productions and hosts  international retreats. Our offerings highlight both traditional and experimental styles of belly dance and Middle Eastern folk dances.

Belly dance is for everyone! Our timeless art form is practiced by people of all ages and from all walks of life. We dance to share in the transformative power of an art form embracing femininity. Sahara Dance seeks to be your home for Middle Eastern dance, and for learning to better love your body through movement.

At its best, belly dance looks effortless, graceful and engaging. Though it may look easy, learning to belly dance beautifully is challenging. Diligent study and practice are necessary to train your body to respond to the music with ease and grace. Sahara Dance prepares students to reach their individual dance goals, whether they include simply having a fun workout or performing on stage.

Classes are built on a standardized curriculum based on class level. Because each instructor has different strengths and styles, taking classes at each level with different teachers will allow you to deepen your dance training and improve your technique.

Repeated exposure to class material will also help you to build the movements into your muscle memory and experience the nuance of the music and each movement. Practice, patience and consistent class attendance are essential to getting the most out of your dance experience.

Come enjoy our many our community events to share the dance, such as classes, workshops, parties, performances and retreats.

We hope to see you shimmying with us at the studio soon!

Yours in dance,

Rachel
