Did you catch our latest announcement? The Sahara Dance Summer Caravan show will be our biggest yet, and will be combined with world-renowned choreographer Jillina’s Bellydance Evolution ‘Jungle Book’ production.

We have an exciting summer in store, filled with opportunities to take your dance to the next level.

Whether you choose to take a technique class, a dance cardio class like Belly Dance Cardio or Samba Fit, or a performance class—or all of the above—you’ll have fun and develop your dance skills!

This summer, let Sahara Dance be your destination for learning, self-expression, and joy through the art of Middle Eastern dance. Join us and let’s dance together!

Perform at our most exciting Summer Caravan yet

Perform in our grandest Summer Caravan show yet on August 24, in the first act before we welcome Bellydance Evolution ‘The Jungle Book’ on stage. Many Raqqesat companies are returning for the summer and we will also have several new or specialty performance classes, including:

  • Belly Dance Party Performance Class with Nicolette: Join Nicolette for an all-levels “Belly Dance Party” performance class. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned dancer, this class offers a fun opportunity to perform on stage without the full company commitment!

New Dance Development Opportunities this summer

In addition to developing your dance through technique and performance classes, we have two upcoming opportunities to take your dancing to the next level:

  • Developing Choreography: Back by popular demand! Develop your unique solo under the guidance of Rachel and Sahara Dance instructors, with a performance opportunity at our summer performance lab and open house in early August. Details and dates to be announced soon.
  • Al Fanaanat Project with Sahra Saeeda: Learn a classic Mahmoud Reda choreography staged by Sahra Saeeda (workshop to be announced) and get personalized video feedback from Sahra on your dancing of the choreography. You can also use this opportunity to audition to perform the choreography at our Summer Caravan show, as part of our Al Fanaanat Project. Stay tuned for details!

Sahra Saeeda’s Journey through Egypt Dance Education Course at Sahara Dance this June!

Belly dancers, mark your calendars! Sahra Saeeda’s Journey through Egypt (JtE) dance education course is making its way to Sahara Dance this June, offering a unique and immersive experience into the world of Egyptian dance.

Sahra Saeeda: A Dance Ethnologist Extraordinaire

JtE, a two-part dance educational intensive, is the brainchild of Sahra Saeeda—a renowned performer, teacher, and dance ethnologist. Sahra’s extensive career as a performer in Egypt and years of in-depth research forms the foundation of this transformative course.

Sahra Saeeda’s dance journey started at the Arabic nightclub, The Cascades, in Los Angeles, CA. With a background in Cultural Anthropology and Archaeology, Sahra’s pursuit of growth led her to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she earned a Masters’s degree in Dance Ethnology.

During her studies, Sahra found a mentor in Farida Fahmy, which paved the way for her research in Cairo. Six years as a local dancer at the Meridian-Heliopolis 5-star hotel granted her insights into the Zeffat al’Arusah and much more.

Today, Sahra teaches and dances globally, sharing her profound theories on dance in Egypt, the regions, the “tables,” and the interconnected nature of it all. With two annual trips to Egypt for ongoing research, Sahra continues to unravel the mysteries of the dance and the culture she fell in love with over 30 years ago.

Journey Through Egypt: A Cultural Exploration

Part I: May 31-June 2

Journey Through Egypt 1 is a captivating overview encompassing movement, posture, clothing, history, and cultural diffusion across different regions of Egypt. Sahra’s unique perspective traces the dance’s evolution from the homes of the people to the dazzling stages of Cairo. Dances studied include Bedouin, Ghawazee, Cairo, Sa’idi, Nubian, Haggallah, Suez Canal, and Fellahin.

Part II: June 7-9

Building on the foundation laid in part 1, Journey Through Egypt 2 delves deeper into the “Dance Zones of Egypt.” Participants explore a variety of dances, including Awalem Shamadan Farrah style, Cairo examples of Hassaballah, Beja Bravery Dance of the Eastern Desert, Bamboteyya of the Suez Canal, Awlad Ali Bedouin Hagallah dance, Zaggala of Siwa, Saidi Assaya, Firqit Zeffah, and more.

Certification

Participants who complete both courses will receive a Journey Through Egypt certification. Spaces are limited, so register today and save your spot.

Student Experiences

Katie

Sahra Saeeda’s Journey Through Egypt is such an important, informative, and interactive course for anyone who considers themselves a belly dancer. JtE underlined how much there is to learn about this art form, and really amplified my interest in folkloric dances.

Sahra is an incredible teacher, dancer, and friend. She has so many amazing stories from her time in Egypt; and she cares so much about staying updated on how dance continues to evolve, in each region and ‘table.’

A few years after completing JtE 1&2 at Sahara Dance, I had the chance to go to Egypt for JtE 3&4. That was by far the best trip I’ve ever taken. Each day is jam packed with activities, events, and special guest teachers relating back to what you learn in 1&2..

Jennifer Anya

Sahra is an engaging teacher who provided “behind the scenes” insights on the essentials of Egyptian dance and culture, which would have been impossible for me to research on my own, but are invaluable to me as a student, performer, and teacher.

Every dancer stands to gain significantly from the JTE course. It explores regional Egyptian dance styles like Fellahin, Saidi, and Bedouin, along with their unique movements, clothing, history, and cultural significance.

I highly recommend JTE to anyone looking to deepen their understanding and connection to Egyptian dance.

Maria

JTE greatly deepened my knowledge of Egyptian regions, cultures, and all the different contexts in which we can see dance in Egypt, ranging from home-style dancing and local professional dance to representations of folklore for the national stage and how this all connects to Cairo dancing.

As belly dancers we can be seen as cultural ambassadors, and many of us do not have personal roots in the Middle East, so it is so important to study the origins of this dance to represent it respectfully. This course covers a great wealth of information from Sahra Saaeda’s many years of studying and traveling in Egypt. It’s also sprinkled with stories from her time dancing in five-star hotels in the Cairo scene, and her experiences in her personal friendship with the legends Farida Fahmy and Mahmoud Reda. I highly recommend it to all students serious about Egyptian dance.

Join us Journey Through Egypt

JtE is not just a dance course; it’s a cultural odyssey connecting students with Egyptian dance’s heart and soul. Take your chance to deepen your understanding and connection to the roots of this beautiful art form. Register for Journey through Egypt and let the cultural exploration begin!

“The Heart of Belly Dance Retreat has changed my life and I’m not exaggerating. I decided to attend on a whim, as a B1 student, after I saw the video on the Sahara Dance website that seemed to portray paradise. I discovered that it really was paradise! I couldn’t believe how joyful and peaceful I felt all week and beyond.

The setting, the amazing supportive community of dancers who have now become friends, the programming, the food! Dance, yoga, and connect with Jillina: designed for all levels

This year, we are thrilled to host the incredible Jillina, a master teacher and choreographer, to guide us through the theme of cultivating connection and creativity through belly dance. Learn more about Jillina’s background here. And if you haven’t met Jillina yet, check out her special message to all Sahara Dance students about the retreat!

Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, Jillina’s classes will inspire and challenge you to explore the artistry, community, and expression within belly dance. All belly dance classes will be designed to be inclusive and supportive of all levels. Each year, we have had beginner students dancing alongside advanced dancers.

The schedule is a bit different each day, most typically offering morning yoga and 1-2 belly dance classes with Jillina, shared breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and evening yoga and mindfulness. Each day also offers plenty of downtime to relax on the beach, explore the town, indulge in a massage, or read by the pool. Best of all, you get to create your schedule. Attend all the classes or none at all – you can go at your own pace.

There will also be one free day that culminates with a salsa night. Finally, dancers are invited to dance in a supportive student show on the second to last day of the retreat—which is always a highlight and fun way to close out the retreat! Learn more about how to be part of show and the steps you’ll need to take here

I’m excited to join my fourth Heart of Bellydance retreat.  It’s an amazing way to deepen your dance practice and connect with other dancers in a beautiful and supportive environment. – Randa

Goal clarity and mindfulness workshops with Tanjina
Tanjina Shapiro, our Retreat Coordinator, is deeply passionate about unlocking potential and helping others achieve clarity in their goals. With a background in mindfulness, journaling, yoga, coaching, and community support, Tanjina will lead two workshops throughout the retreat: one on goal clarity and mindfulness and a heart-mind workshop. Both will be opportunities to set intentions and connect with your heart center, free of distractions from regular daily life.

The Heart of Belly Dance Retreat has become a ritual for me. It is a week where I get to deeply connect with dance, free my mind to invite calm and stillness through meditation and where my body finds comfort through the daily yoga practice. The retreat offers a rare opportunity to connect with old friends and make new ones. Thanks to HoBD I have friends in all corners of the world!

I love that the retreat is structured and flexible at the same time. What I mean by that is, you can join every class and be as active as you want, or choose to take things at your own pace. After all we are in Costa Rica, which is the blue zone and at this retreat, you can leave your worries behind, and really immerse yourself in self-care, learning and deep connection with like-minded people.

Hosting the retreat on behalf of Rachel Brookmire last year (and again this year), I am most looking forward to learning from the incredibly talented artist Jillina. And giving back to the dance community that means so much to me.

-Tanjina

From the studio to the National Mall: Sahara Dance’s 2023 Year in Review

Dear Sahara Dance Community,

As we approach the end of an incredible year, it’s time to reflect on the journey we’ve shared. From unforgettable performances to renewing our studio lease and welcoming new and returning teachers and performance companies, 2023 has truly been a year to celebrate for Sahara Dance.

Your dedication, passion, and artistry have made 2023 a truly extraordinary chapter in Sahara Dance history. Thank you for being a part of it. Here’s to bringing this momentum and uplifting energy with us into 2024!

With love and shimmies,
Rachel

Performances: A Year to Remember

Sahara Dance had our biggest and grandest performance season yet. To every performer who joined us for four beautiful shows—thank you! Your artistry is what makes these performances ones to remember.

Our performance season kicked off with a bang, marking the return of Under a Desert Moon in April 2023—our first major gala show back since the pandemic hit. The energy was electric, setting the stage for what would become our most significant performance season to date. Check out this lovely “behind the scenes” reel from Under a Desert Moon and get excited about joining us for this show in 2024!

The Sahara Dance Summer Caravan in August offered a sneak peek into our upcoming World Cultural Festival performance, building anticipation and excitement among dancers and audience alike and featured the debut of two new performance companies: Raqqesat Beirut, featuring Lebanese-style belly dance, and Raqqesat Indigo, featuring belly dance fusion.

Then came the monumental “Sahara Dance Arabian Nights” performance at the World Cultural Festival, a historic event on the National Mall: an epic 8-minute dance, highlighting the Middle East, choreographed by Jillina for 100 dancers and performed on September 29, 2023.

On opening night our hearts soared on stage, as we presented the dance to hundreds of thousands of people watching around the world, with the Washington Monument and US Capitol as our backdrops. This project challenged us all and we grew as a result.

We are so deeply grateful for our community and everyone that contributed their time, energy, and love to making this possible. The dedication and hard work of our dancers and teachers were truly showcased in the eight-minute performance that will forever be a source of inspiration and pride for our community. Check out the new performance photos and full video on YouTube

We closed the year with a beautiful and heart-warming show Sahara Dance Winter Caravan in December, with each performance demonstrating the growth of every dancer at our studio post-World Cultural Festival. Congratulations to all for their stunning performances, and heartfelt thanks to our dedicated teachers for their breathtaking choreographies.

Sahara Dance also performed at local events, including Fiesta Asia and World Cultural Festival pop-ups, among others.

Studio Milestones: Home Sweet Home

We renewed the lease on our light-filled studio in Tenleytown and made it through our first year as the sole tenant—a milestone made possible by the unwavering support of our incredible community! Walk with us through our studio in this video, also known as our “happy place!”

Retreats

We continued to hold belly dance and yoga and movement-inspired retreats in locations that support our need to reset, reconnect with ourselves and others, and express ourselves through dance!

Our annual “Heart of Belly Dance Retreat” in Costa Rica in February was a soulful experience, and we’re thrilled that we’ll be bringing Jillina to this retreat in May 2024 for an unforgettable journey of dance and connection. Spaces are still available!

Additionally, our two sold-out “Dance, Breathe, and Release” retreats in West Virginia provided a space for self-discovery, self-care, community, and connection.

Special Workshops and Projects

We continued to host workshops from Sahara Dance faculty and visiting instructors throughout the year. While too many to name, some highlights include:

Mohamed Ali, a professional dancer hailing from Egypt, led multiple workshops throughout the year, ranging from oriental shaabi to bambouti, saidi, and more. Omoladun and Randy taught a dancing to rhythms class with live drumming. Alma and DJ Kimo came to the studio twice to teach a dancing to live music workshop, which offered tips and tricks for entering and exiting the stage and improvisation.

In September 2023, Virginia led two advanced workshops exploring a challenging mejanse to a classic Abdel Halim Hafez song and an earthy baladi and launched the first edition of Al Fanaanat Project. This initiative offered personal development and feedback to dancers, and provided a by-audition opportunity to showcase Virginia’s choreography on stage.

One of our most popular new workshops, Belly Dance like Shakira, taught by Florencia, resonated with our community, adding a touch of Shakira to our dance repertoire. This one-hour, all-levels workshop is perfect for friends and family without dance experience who are interested in dropping in, having fun, and giving belly dance a try!

New Faculty and Performance Companies

This year, we welcomed Florencia to the Sahara Dance faculty, whose extensive training in Argentina brings an expanded perspective to our dance community. Additionally, we celebrated the return of Julie and Jennifer, each expanding our class and workshop offerings with their unique expertise and styles.

In an exciting development, three new performance companies, Raqqesat Arabi (directed by Leilah Moon), Raqqesat Indigo (directed by Ami), and Raqqesat Beirut (directed by Alma), joined our Sahara Dance performance companies, with vibrant performances featuring belly dance fusion and Lebanese belly dance.

As we look ahead to 2024, let’s carry the spirit of sisterhood, artistry, and making time for dance and doing what brings us joy into the new year. Thank you for being an integral part of the Sahara Dance community. Here’s to another year of dancing together!
