Cairo’s “Transition” from “Golden Age” to “Modern Egyptian” Dance –  combination lecture and movement

Explore an interesting historical moment, illustrated in color film. The musical theater “Golden Age” of the black and white films was considered old fashioned. Films were now in color with different stories. Dancers had a challenge; they didn’t want to appear old fashioned, but they couldn’t go back to awalem, many dancers had been locked into a character. During this transition time specific steps were popular, often in response to the new open skirts, as they transitioned to filling the big stage with large dance movement and orchestra, rather than the tight camera character driven films.
